New Parent Governor - Vote Here

320px A coloured voting box.svgWe are searching for a new parent governor at HABS who will continue to build strong links between the Academy and home, so that we continue 'developing aspirational young people who thrive in a changing world.'

We have three parents interested in the role. They have each written a short statement below. Please read these and then complete the link below to vote for the parent that you feel would be represent the parents on the governoring baord.

Best wishes

David Carr
Acting Principal - Harris Academy Battersea

Kelly

I would like to express my interest in the role as a parent governor at Harris Academy Battersea. I am the parent to a 13-year-old in Year 9 and I selected this school due to the potential I saw on the three separate visits I made before he started attending. I was moved by the core values of knowledge, resilience and integrity and the fact that the school made significant efforts to bring this ethos to life in everyday school life.

I am a Nurse Consultant in Haematology with a background in transfusion medicine, bone marrow transplantation and oncology. I work in the NHS and as well as having patient-facing roles, I also have financial and budgetary, managerial, policy, guidance and leadership responsibilities during what is possibly the hardest time in the NHS.

My responsibilities extend across three sites at a tertiary hospital and I feel that this knowledge basis could be valuable in a school setting especially when challenged with issues around the current pandemic.

As well as being a parent, I feel that within my role as a nurse I understand the importance of advocacy and speaking up especially when afforded the opportunities that not all people have, when it comes to holding people to account.

I do feel that given the opportunity, I could serve the parents, children and school well as a parent governor.

I hope I can be considered for this role.

James

As well as a career that has included banking, local government and, most recently, the NHS, I have over 20 years’ experience volunteering as a co-opted governor in several local schools, most recently as the chair of a rapidly improving primary. I am keen to use this experience as a parent governor at Harris Battersea.

My son is in Year 8 and my daughter will (hopefully) be joining the school in September. We chose Harris not just because it is an outstanding school, but also because it has a clear vision and set of values and an impressive staff group. The transformation from the old Battersea Tech is down to the school’s strong leadership, but parents and governors have a key role in ensuring that improvement continues. Governors have three core duties: to set and monitor the budget, set the direction and vision, and hold the senior leadership to account. I think the last two are particularly important.

Although staff have our children’s interest at heart, they bring their professional viewpoint; it is critical to have a strong voice that does not just understand the school, but can represent the parent view and provide, along with other non-staff governors, an external perspective. I’m proud to be a parent at Harris Battersea and would be honoured to contribute to its future success as a governor.Thank you for taking the time to consider my statement, please do get in touch if you have any questions.

Sani

I chose to apply for the Parent Governor role at Harris Academy Battersea (HABS) to actively transfer parents’ perspectives to the Academy Principal and staff through the Board of Governors (BoG). HABS is one of the best schools in England and we as parents want to ensure it continues to be as such and excel even more by encouraging the engagement of all parents with ideas and thoughts on which improvement plans would be based. My focus would be on pupils’ wellbeing, health and safety, security, education, learning challenges, school provisions, school support, and meals.

As a parent governor my approach would be to:

a. Promote the best interests of all children at school;

b. Maintain good relations with and be available to all parents;

c. Proactively link up with parents and invite views and thoughts on school matters and address through the BoG and School Principal and staff;

d. Propose a “Key Performance Indicators” system which would tabulate parents’ views to be addressed along with timescales and targets. Parents would be kept updated regularly;

e. Monitor school accounts and budget allocations to ensure pupils’ best interests; and

f. Champion excellent outcomes for all young people so that no one is disadvantaged because of background or circumstances.

Academic achievements: Masters in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering.
Work experience: Over 35 years in consultancies (held various Company Director positions).
