Year 12 Study Aquatic Ecosystems At Barnes Wetland Centre
Year 12 Biology students recently visited Barnes Wetland Centre to study the biodiversity of pond ecosystems.
Upon completing pond samples using professional sampling techniques, our Biologists investigated the effects of pH and oxygen concentration on the diversity of organisms present in freshwater environments.
Students were then able to use the species they identified as pollution indicators, showing the cleanliness of the water.
Among the many species identified, students confidently collected freshwater boatman, leeches and daphnia to name a few. They then entered the field and completed plant distribution studies.
It was great to see so much theory from the classroom being applied outdoors. Students had a fantastic day, even if many of the highlights reported were 'watching the otters'!
