'For Black Boys'
On Monday 22nd April, we took a group of Y11, Y12 and Y13 students to see the play ‘For Black Boys’ at the Garrick Theatre. It is a play that has been rated five stars by The Guardian and described as ‘a powerful and deeply moving meditation on Black masculinity and Black life in Britain’.
After a 40-minute journey to the theatre and a quick restock of cookies (or a burrito in Tumi’s case), we excitedly took our seats to the soundtrack of Kano’s ‘P&Qs’ and Lethal Bizzle’s ‘Pow’. Much to my dismay, Hadee seemed to be the only student who could recognise and name these legendary songs. The play began and we sat deeply immersed for two and a half hours as the actors beautifully explored themes like colourism, racial discrimination, romantic relationships, gang violence and identity. We roared with laughter, sang along, sat forward in our chairs during most the emotionally charged moments and (almost) cried. At the end, we all jumped up for a well-deserved standing ovation as the crowd erupted with applause. On the journey back to HABS, we shared our reviews and dissected our favourite moments.
I had already seen the play but watching ‘For Black Boys’ with our Black boys was an experience that I will always cherish.
