Sustainability Challenge
Over the course of a week staff and students were tasked to engage in the HABS sustainability challenge. This kicked started on Monday 22nd April with the Zero Paper Waste challenge, when staff and students had to use less paper, do no printing or actively reduce their printing for the day. Also they had to ensure, when necessary, that they used the academy paper recycling bins. This was a great start to the week especially as it was Earth Day! Next on the list was Energy Saving Tuesday, where staff and students had to switch off lights and power off equipment when not in use. Calculate your Carbon Footprint came next on Wednesday, where staff and students had to use the WWF footprint calculator to measure their individual carbon footprint. For Thursday this was Zero Plastic day. No 'one use' water bottles were sold in the canteen so water fountains and reusable water bottles were the alternative. Some found this challenging but many rose to the challenge. Finally on Friday, at the end of the week, the challenge culminated with My Eco Pledge. At break time the pledge board was set up so students and staff could write out their individual pledges (on scrap recycled paper obviously!). The Year 10 sustainability group were on hand to encourage individuals, answer questions, and give more information on environmental actions. Overall the week was a little challenging but thoroughly rewarding, with so many people taking these small individual steps to make a huge difference to our planet!
