Local MP Marsha De Cordova visits HABS
In a community-driven initiative, our local Member of Parliament paid a visit to Harris Academy Battersea (HABS) to interact with students and promote diversity in literature.
Ms De Cordova began her visit by meeting with the Head of Academy, Charlie Comerford, and the Executive Principal, Peter Groves, to discuss our shared priorities for students at HABS and more widely for the education of young people in our borough, discussing ways that we can work together to ensure our schools are thriving, welcoming and inclusive spaces for all young people.
She then met with a fabulous panel of student leaders including our Sixth Form Presidents and members of the Academy’s newly elected student council. Students put their questions to our MP on current affairs, her journey to becoming an MP and her role now.
As part of this visit, the MP presented students with a collection of books exclusively written by Black British authors donated by Penguin Books. Emphasising the significance of diverse voices in literature, the gesture aimed to broaden students' perspectives and foster a deeper understanding of cultural richness within the community.
HABS students were enthusiastic about the visit, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to interact with their local representative and receiving books that reflect the diversity of their community. The event highlights the commitment of local leader to nurturing an inclusive and culturally aware environment within our educational institution.
We are excited to welcome Marsha De Cordova back to the Academy soon , and to hopefully visit her in Parliament in the near future!
